Aurangabad (Maharashtra) has a few beautiful Buddhist sites — both ancient caves and modern temples.

1. Ajanta Caves

  • Location: ~105 km from Aurangabad city

  • About: A UNESCO World Heritage Site with 30 rock-cut caves dating from 2nd BCE to 6th CE.

  • Highlights: Magnificent murals, sculptures of the Buddha, monasteries (viharas), and prayer halls (chaityas).

  • Tip: Closed on Mondays; best visited with a guide to understand the art stories (Jataka tales).

 2. Ellora Caves – Buddhist Section

  • Location: ~30 km from Aurangabad

  • About: Out of 34 caves, caves 1–12 are Buddhist monasteries and chapels carved between the 5th–8th CE.

  • Highlights: Cave 10 (Vishvakarma / Carpenter’s Cave) has a grand seated Buddha and ribbed ceiling imitating wooden beams.

3. Bibi-ka-Maqbara Buddhist Temple (Not Applicable)

Sometimes visitors mix up Bibi-ka-Maqbara (a Mughal tomb) with Buddhist monuments — but it’s Islamic architecture, not a temple.

 4. Gautam Buddha Vihar, CIDCO

  • Location: Near CIDCO N-2 area, Aurangabad city

  • About: A modern Buddha vihar where locals gather for chanting and Dhamma talks.

  • Good For: Meditation sessions, community events (especially on Buddha Purnima).

 5. Other Nearby Buddhist Spots

  • Pitalkhora Caves – ~40 km west; early Hinayana caves with stupas and elephants carved in stone.

  • Devgiri (Daulatabad) Fort area – Has some small Buddhist remains from the Yadava period.
